so my grandmother keeps trying to escape. i guess i should clarify that statement. she is 93 years old and has alzheimer's. she is living in a great assisted living home. even at 93 she is in amazing health. she jogged a mile every day until she was 88. then she broke her hip. now she is still has amazing physical strength. unfortunately, the alzheimer's is having a bad affect on her memory. she keeps wanting to find her way home to Muskegon. the thing is....she is in Muskegon. well she keeps finding ways to take the screen out of the window and climb out. the first couple of times it wasn't too bad since she was noticed outside right away....but this last time....a guy whose mother is in the same home as my grandma saw her walking down the street. by the time that he told the staff at the assisted living home, she was about a mile and a half away. luckily they found her again. this is the 4th time it has happened in the last year. we have asked them to look into locks for the screens and/or an alarm that alerts the nurses station if one of the screens is opened. why haven't they done anything yet? i hate doing what if's...but what if that guy didn't see her. she could have really been hurt. the possibilities are endless of what could have happened. i'm really scared for her.
another thing that is scaring me with my grandma is that my dad told us that she didn't know who he was the last time he went to visit. julie and i are pretty sure that she doesn't remember our names but she always knows us as "the girls". she would always ask my dad about "the girls" whenever he saw her. well if she didn't remember her son, do you really think she will remember us? even though i knew that day would come sometime....the thought of it still devistates me. i'm almost afraid to visit her because i don't want to know if she doesn't know me. i know that is selfish but i can't help how i feel. i realize that i don't need to deal with this until thanksgiving but it is an overwhelming feeling. i'm really hoping that the day when my dad visited her and she didn't remember him was one of her bad days and that we will see her on a good day like we have in the past. i'll just have to wait and see.
